The Alba Gallery
The
alba gallery was set up alongside the cafe in 1993.
It's aim from the outset was to showcase the abundance
of artistic talent in the immediate vicinity - the catchment
area then grew somewhat as the gallery has had artists
from as far afield as Paris and Scotland exhibiting.
Over 100 artists, photographers, designers have shown
their work - the clientele of the cafe had a highly developed
appreciation
of art and look forward to the changing exhib-
itions. The opportunity to enjoy contemporary art with
excellent food in a welcoming and laid back atmosphere was
an antidote to those with a fear of the "white-space" of
contemporary
galleries.
With
the closure of the cafe the gallery now exists without
a venue. Neil will continue to curate exhibitions seeking out
different and unusual venues. The website will continue to
run as an archive as a thankyou to all the artists who
participated in this nine year experiment in artist-run spaces.
